Camps and Forts
Roman forts and camps had similar layouts and they had walls and ditches around them
Camps had tents, not solid buildings, because they were temporary
Most camps were for one night stays only
Making and breaking camps took time and was one reason soldiers usually marched only twenty miles a day
Forts were more solid because they were expected to be used for longer
The walls and buildings were usually built of timber
If the fort was going to be used for a very long time, the timber was often replaced with stone
Fortresses could house from five to six thousand men
Roman forts were not built to be defended
They were places to sleep in and safely store goods and equipment
If trouble was coming, soldiers usually left the forts to meet it; sieges were avoided
