English Course for Leaving Certificate 2020
1. The text on its own to be studied:
· Hamlet (William Shakespeare)
2. The three other texts are to be studied in a comparative manner under the following headings:
i) Theme or Issue
ii) Literary Genre - techniques used by the author to hell his/her story
iii) The Cultural Context - norms and values evident within the world of the text
3. Six poems from five of the following eight poets will be studied:
Eavan Boland
Emily Dickinson *
Paul Durcan
Robert Frost *
D.H. Lawrence
Eilean Ni Chuilleanain
Adrienne Rich
William Wordsworth
*Poets to be covered in Fifth Year
4. Comprehension, Functional Writing, Unseen Poetry and Essay Writing will be studied under the following five language types:
Language of Argument - debate, discursive writing*
Language of Persuasion - opinion article, speech
Language of Narration - short story, personal writing
Language of Information - newspaper article, memo/proposal, interview, reports
Aesthetic Use of Language - letter, diary account, review
*Note: the examples given above are not mutually exclusive (for e.g. a speech can have elements of all five language categories)
